A little bit more about Lernis and Yaima Tejeda:

Lernis and Yaima Tejeda are educated, motivated parents who are thrilled to access all of the opportunities America and Austin have to offer. The family came to Austin from Cuba, where they had to choose between buying clothes and food for the family, despite her work as a doctor and his as an airplane mechanic. Both of them love Austin’s people, climate, and the sense of freedom they have from living in America.

Both Lernis and Yaima hit the ground running and took jobs in housekeeping in downtown Austin – he in a hotel and her in an office building – to immediately begin saving for their future here. They are excited to build a stable life for their one-year-old, Dylan, and to grow their family, but they recognize that the cost of safe, stable living in Austin will be a challenge without assistance.

When the Tejeda family first arrived in Austin, they lived briefly in South Austin and then moved to a North Lamar neighborhood where they have been for three years. Unfortunately, they don’t feel safe in their current environment, especially since they have had a child. The neighborhood has had many break-ins and robberies of homes and cars, and they feel strongly that they want to raise their family in a safer environment. Thankfully, a friend of Lernis’s was able to tell the family about Austin Habitat, and they began working toward home-ownership. The family is very grateful to the Catholic Build supporters for their time and effort, and want to tell the sponsors “God bless you and give you even more blessings!”
